I used to have a real, not obsession, but passion, for chairs. I really, really, really liked chairs. I liked oversized chairs, petite chairs, oddly shaped chairs, uniquely upholstered chairs. I just liked chairs. When I’d go to a furniture store, I always paid special attention to the chairs. Over the years, friends who have been aware of this oddity of mine, have bought me chairs in various formats. I have chair-shaped napkin rings, salt shakers, I have miniature collections of chairs made of porcelain, metal, wood, etc. If I had more room, I’d probably have more chairs.
I didn’t understand, for the longest time, how this interest in chairs got started. I didn’t, that is, until one day, as I was reading in the Book of Hebrews . It says that when Jesus finished His work, He then sat down at the right hand of the Father. And then it hit me!
What does a chair represent? A chair represents FINISHED WORK!!! You don’t sit down until the job is DONE, right? That’s what Jesus did. He got all His work done. He fulfilled the purpose for which His Father sent Him into the world. He completed His assignment. And then He did what? He SAT DOWN!
Remember, we were the ones who were born with a sinful nature. We were
the ones who, rightfully, had an invoice for sin waiting to be paid. We were the ones who were eternally separated from the love of our heavenly father. There was NOTHING we could do to make it right. There was NOTHING we could give to pay the price. We were lost and pathetic, without God, without hope. But then, God sent Jesus. He came in the form of a sinless man, and paid the debt of sin for all of mankind. Jesus paid for the healing of our bodies; deliverance of our emotions; the restoration of our hope and the provision for our lives. When He completed this AWESOME task, He went and SAT DOWN at the right hand of the Father. Now the best part of all this is, when we accept Jesus into our lives, we get the full benefit of what HE did. Do you know what that means? That means, you can . . . SIT DOWN!
Please understand. When I say “sit down,” I don’t mean it in a “do nothing, act lazy, waitin’ for my change to come,” sort of way. I mean it in the way that it is spoken of in the Book of Hebrews, Chapter 10 verse 12.
It talks about how Jesus completed the mission God gave Him. It talks about the once-and-for-all-ness of the mission. Referring to Jesus, the passage says, “…this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;” That’s why in Hebrews 4:9 it says, “There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.” Did you get that? There is a “rest for the people of God.” That rest is a knowing that, because of the FINISHED WORK of Jesus Christ, you can rest, assured knowing that God’s Word is true regarding whatever you are dealing with in your life right now. So what’s your issue? What is happening in your life that you are trying to work through, struggle with and figure out on your own? Stop!! Stop working, stop hustling and stop calculating. Stop trying to figure it out. Instead, focus that energy on His Word. Labor to get to a point of REST. Spend enough time meditating His Promises so that you can REST ASSURED that, what God has promised, He is able to perform. REST ASSURED that, because of the FINISHED WORK of Christ, there’s no more running around like a headless chicken for you. Jesus did the work, so that you can enjoy the rest. So, now, if you are truly convinced that what I’ve said is true, I have an announcement to make: Will all the REAL Believers, PLEASE SIT DOWN!!!
