I’ve attended some very meaningful graduation ceremonies in my day. I’ll never forget how excited I was when my then 5 year old daughter graduated from kindergarten. It may seem like a small thing to those who have “been there, done that”, but graduations are a big deal. And whether you’re graduating from high school or college or some other educational program, a graduation marks the completion of a body of work that confirms your mastery of the skills required to go to the next level. And you know what? It works the same way with your faith.
Just as it is in education, so it is in your walk of faith. You should always find that your faith is moving you forward. Your faith should be in a constant state of growth, challenge and progress. Just as a 7th grader would be insulted if they were given the task of completing a 4th grade level assignment, there should be a level of faith that you’ve mastered to such a degree that it is no longer a challenge for you. So why is it, when our faith is tested, that we want to roll over and scream a big fat, “Why-Is-God-Letting-This-Happen-To-Me?” Why? Because we haven’t realized that there is an unavoidable connection between the test/difficult time you’re going through and the growth that you’ll experience as a result of it.
Yesterday, in a conversation with my daughter, she explained to me that she didn’t like the way that her school had organized the lunch periods. I had to explain to her that the only thing that is constant in life . . . is change. Are you in the middle of a difficult time in your life right now? Consider it a challenge to your faith and an opportunity to grow. Dig your heels into the Word of God. Refuse to do anything other than “SPEAK THE WORD ONLY.” Determine that you are going to snatch your victory from the jaws of your situation and STAND YOUR GROUND. Remember, this is a test. THIS IS ONLY A TEST.
Are you in a “sweet spot” in your life? Are the “waters of life” calm for you right now? Consider yourself in the “lesson” phase of life and recognize that an exam IS coming soon enough. But for you, now is the time to prepare for the next challenge and build your faith for that next test.
Everyone wants to have an awesome testimony, but a testimony only comes when you’ve had a test. The testimony is the graduation. It’s the diploma you get when you’ve used your faith to weather the storm, overcome the trial and emerge with the victorious proof; the knowing that NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE TO HIM THAT CAN BELIEVE. But the test…the test is the proof of the learning you’ve done. The test is the time that you must remember the word of God that you’ve planted in your heart. The test is your chance to prove that you can DO the Word and not just HEAR the Word.
A graduation is a momentous occasion. It’s the culmination of the lessons we’ve learned, assignments we’ve completed and exams we’ve successfully taken. And while you may no longer find yourself in a formal educational program, life itself will provide never-ending opportunities to grow in your faith. So, grab your cap, position your tassel and zip up your gown. The music is beginning to play. You’ve passed the tests, your faith has grown and now…. it’s time to graduate.
