Imagine this: You’ve been entrusted by a King to make a special delivery. The gift is wrapped in the single, most precious, one-of-a-kind material that exists. And it must arrive on time.
But as you embark on your journey, you are sidetracked by friends who want to share the details of the latest happenings at work. They want to talk about the recent election and other current events. To be polite, you listen for a while, but you quickly realize that the conversation is not conducive to the task you have at hand. So you politely dismiss yourself and continue on your way. Now, you are rushing to complete your assignment. Besides, no one wants to disappoint The King
Your journey is going smoothly now. It looks like you’ll make it. The King will be pleased. But wait, out of nowhere comes someone from your past. Maybe it’s a person you went to high school with or a former college roommate. Either way, they are the last person you need to see right now. The minute they recognize you, they begin by saying, “Hey, Remember that time you…” Their words continue to remind you of a former self you buried long ago. This time is not productive. So you stop them, mid sentence, and say, “I’m not that person anymore.” And off you go toward your destination. Almost there.
When you reach the location, there is a large crowd awaiting your arrival. You think to yourself, “I hope it’s not too late to bring my gift.” So you begin searching for someone to hand the package to when, suddenly, The King appears. Smiling, He asks you to open the box. But you thought you were just suppose to deliver it. You’re a little taken aback. Nevertheless, you open the box and find it to be … empty.
Now you’re puzzled. You look up at The King and He begins to explain: “This crowd … these people… they’ve all been waiting for you. You are the packaging that holds the gift that each of them needs to complete their own assignments. Whether it’s the encouraging words you speak, the words you write, or the solution to a medical mystery they hidden inside of you, they all need your gift. Maybe you have an idea for an invention that will change the world. Whatever it is you have, YOU have it. YOU embody the gift that the whole world has been waiting for. . . . it’s you.”
You smile because, somehow, those words pierce your soul and you know them to be true. From that moment forward, you focus to bring your gift to its full potential so that it touches every life that’s been waiting. The King is very pleased.
