Cancel your trip to “ER.” Let me explain: If you’ve made a reservation to visit the land of “ER,” cancel it now. What’s the Land of “ER”? It’s a place that’s cruel and cunning ; a place where insecurity abounds and your “good” is never “good enough.” Most of us have taken trips there before, but we always arrived as the result of a wrong turn, loss of focus or misguided advice.
Cancel your trip to “ER.” In the Land of “ER”, while you’re probably a very smart person, someone there is always smart-ER. Are you funny? Someone there is funny-ER. Think you’re pretty? The people there are pretty-ER. In the Land of “ER”, your new car is nice, but someone there has a car that is new-ER and nice-ER. In the Land of “ER”, your house may be spacious, but someone there has a house that is big-ER, with grass that is green-ER, trees that are tall-ER, neighbors who are friendly-ER and a life that just seems way bett-ER. Are you slim? Toned? Strong? In the Land of “ER”, they have bodies that are slim-ER, ton-ER (okay, I know I should say “more toned”, but work with me) and strong-ER than you ever thought possible.
Cancel your trip to “ER”. There is no happiness there yet, millions of people arrive daily. Why? Because we’re constantly bombarded with images of people who have the bodies; drive the cars; live in the houses or are living the lives we think we’d rather have. Beware!!!! It’s a trap! When you compare yourself to others, look out!!! You’ve just programmed your personal GPS to take you directly to the Land of “ER”. But wait! There is hope. If you want to get your thoughts back in order and your life back on track, stop measuring yourself against others.
According to Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT), God has a plan for your life. His plan is not impacted by, or dependent upon, the lives or opinions of others. There is no need for you to make comparisons. The focus for you should be to fulfill His plan and purpose for your life by maximizing the gifts He has placed inside of you. There’s a quote (author unknown) that says, “The only person you should seek to be better than is the person you were yesterday.” Follow your own path. Contentment eludes those who focus on the path and progress of others. Spend each day getting closer and closer to the fulfillment of your calling.
The truth is: You are enough. You have been fully equipped to fulfill the purpose and answer the call for which you were created. No one can beat you at being you. No one is better than you at being you. You are unique. You are precious. You’re not one in a million. You’re not one in a billion. YOU are one of a kind.
So, what do you say? Are you willing to cancel your trip to “ER”? Here’s your LifeSpeak this Week assignment: For the next 7 days, say this simple prayer. Thank you, God, for having a one-of-a-kind plan for one-of-a-kind me. I lay every insecurity at your feet and rest in the knowledge that your plan for my life is perfect. No more comparing myself to others. I look only to you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
So the next time you’re tempted to compare yourself to others, STOP! Don’t take a trip to the Land of “ER.” Instead, remember Jeremiah 29:11. Stand on the promise that God has a plan and a purpose for your life. Decide that you will settle for nothing less than the fulfillment of everything God has created you to be. God has so much more for you than your current condition would lead you to believe. You’ve got a future waiting. Your life has no time, no place and no need for comparisons. You’re on your way, and your journey to Destiny does not include a single visit . . . to the deceptive Land of “ER.”
