Do you think that a Will Call window is just about getting tickets? I did, too; but, there’s more. In this edition of LifeSpeak for Living, I’ll share how God taught me that my approach to Will Call and receiving His Will (in my life) are, surprisingly, intertwined.
I was so excited to find out that we had tickets to attend a concert. (The tickets would be waiting at Will Call, but I didn’t know that, at the time.) The concert was more than 2 months away but, it was still awesome. When I heard the good news, I believed it. I didn’t ask for proof or demand to see the tickets. I didn’t even ask about the location. Based on my husband’s word, I got excited and started planning.
It wasn’t until the evening of the concert, as we were walking toward the venue, that I asked, “Do you have the tickets?” To which my husband simply replied, “Will Call.” Next, we walked into the theater. He approached the window labeled “Will Call” and said, “Hi. I have tickets waiting.” He then proceeded to give his name and provide proof of his identity. Next, a hand, holding two tickets, emerged from the window without hesitation. The transaction at the Will Call window reminded me of a verse of scripture.
In the Book of Hebrews, the Apostle Paul instructs us, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16 (NIV)
I realized, from that exchange, that the way my husband approached the “Will Call” window, is the way we should approach God in prayer — boldly. See, my husband wasn’t hesitant, tentative, shy or uncertain when he walked up to that Will Call window. He wasn’t worried that the tickets may have been sold out or if the attendant at the window would turn him away. His posture was that of someone who knew why they came; what they wanted and who fully expected to receive it.
Do you see the marked similarity between how we should approach the Throne of Grace and the way my husband approached the Will Call window? Let me outline the 5 characteristics of the exchange:
- Confidence (posture/physical)
- Expectation (emotional/mental)
- Pre-paid (know that your request rightfully belongs to you)
- Name (Whose name were these tickets purchased under)
- Proof of Identity/Purchase
Confidence – This refers to your physical posture and demeanor. Believe that God is for you. He loves you, just as you’d love your own children. Begging is not necessary. He loves it when you to come to him. You have a right to approach the throne, so act like it.
Expectation – This refers to the believed outcome of your actions. The fact that I’ve come with confidence conveys that I expect and believe that my request will be granted.
Pre-paid – The tickets had been pre-purchased long before my husband physically stood before the window. So, too, has God provided for us and the Blood of Jesus shed to pre-pay for every request that you bring to the Throne of Grace that’s in accordance to His Will* . It’s been pre-paid.
(*Here’s an explanation regarding His Will. If my husband purchased tickets to see the “Circles” in concert, but showed up for the tickets on the night that the “Triangles” were playing…those tickets would not have been at the Will Call window. Similarly, If you go to God asking Him to let you date someone else’s spouse; break the law or do anything that is contrary to His Word, that’s not in His Will. Don’t expect it. God won’t bless your mess.)
Name – Who paid for the tickets? My husband. Who paid for the grace your situation requires? Jesus. You give His name at the Throne. You come boldly in that name because He’s the One Who paid for the Grace you require.
Proof of Identity – My husband had to show his driver’s license and method of payment. You must show something, too. When you approach the Throne of Grace, your proof is every scripture that identifies you as a Child of God. Your proof of ID is every promise in God’s Word that relates to your request. The method of payment was the Blood of Jesus. The next time you go to God in prayer, remember Will Call:
- Hold your head high — Confidence
- Throw your shoulders back – Expectation
- Know that His grace was purchased in Advance — Pre-paid
- Make your request in the Name of Jesus – Purchaser/Payer
- Provide proof of ID/payment:(Word of God/Blood of Jesus)- Identity
Call to Action — So, what do you say? Are you willing to come boldly to God with your requests? If so, here’s your LifeSpeak this Week assignment: For the next 7 days, start your mornings by saying this simple prayer: Thank you, God, for showing me that I can come boldly to Your Throne of Grace, anytime for every need. You have provided me with confidence, expectation, pre-payment, the Name of Jesus and proof of ID. So, I have faith that my prayers get answers and I’ll give You all the glory. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
Now, you can leave the Throne of Grace, just as confident as we were about the concert tickets, knowing that your requests and all the promises of God, have received a “Yes and AMEN!”
